Pleasance Courtyard
30th Jul – 24th Aug (21:45)
It is gala night, & the volcanic spirit that is Amelia Hamilton bounds into action before our eyes. A fascinating blend of ninja hip-hop & cheeky-chapiness blooms & bursts like an air fountain of soap-bubbles all around an enraptur’d audience. There’s modernistic humour, there’s carousels of movement, & there’s Hamilton’s streetwise music – with the latter probably a little loud to tell you the truth, some of the words were getting lost in the acoustics.
For a full hour Hamilton’s energy never lets up, & that’s a good thing, because her energy is a wonderful thing to tap into, as she tosses uproarious regiments of frolics at us, smashing thro’ the frail veneer of our all mundane existences. We find oursleves wanting to know more about her, to engage with her in some way, this future superstar unfolding from her youthful bloom into an electric 21st century performer.
Hamilton’s reputation is fresh & rising – a featured artist on BBC iPlayer and BBC Radio, Runner Up Komedia New Comedy Awards 2024, BBC New Comedy Awards Nominee 2024 – & now she’s trying her hand at the universal culturefest of the Fringe for the first time. I think she was splendid, but a little shy of maintaining consistently funny material. Still, she is uberpoetessial, & very witty, with a keen & accurate observatory mind. And can’t keep still for one second!
Hamilton is definitely one to watch going forward – & backwards, & sideways, & in every direction, For the Edinburgh Fringe, 2025, she has dove right in at the deep end, where she is definitely getting to grips with the manic tides & emotional undertows of Fringe comedy. As her title suggests, Amelia is quite an unforgettable woman – a proper joyball of fun-, & her later timeslot & her effervescent whirlwind will definitely set you up for the wilder hours of the Fringe.
