Biig Piig

Glasgow, SWG3

If one love’s live music, then living in Scotland’s Central Belt is the equivalent of living in Pisistran Athens, sitting in the newly-built Dionysian Temple at the dawn of theatrical age – exciting, innovative & thoroughly intoxicating. There is a constant stream of brand new or long establish’d acts flowing thro the city on a more metaphysical River Clyde.

The other day at Glasgow’s SWG3 I went to visit what was, to me, one of those brand new acts, the quite astonishing Biig Piig from Glasgow. Born in Cork, Ireland, then rais’d in Spain, & a few 8 years after loading her first tracks up onto Soundcloud, she’s now releasing her debut album 11:11, thro’ Sony Music, which wing’d its way into the world only a couple of weeks ago. Touring said album, then, has brought her to Glasgow, & on she bounds onto the stage shouting ‘Glasgow, what’s going on!?” in a bikini top & pigtails – quite the star!

You can tell why she’s on a major label – her music sounds epic, her songwriting’s cutting-edge, her voice is stunning, & she sings sometimes in Spanish – international appeal, & sales, there like! I really felt that she was singing to the collective us, to each of us individually, to herself, the Mother Goddess *& to all of the ollamhs of Ireland – at the same time! She’s also got this mesmerizing dance-groove on the go, all sorcerous handweaving & bewitching shoulder-sways. Yeah, well cool.

I ask’d a fan why she was there, & she said that Biig Piiig was suggested her to be listen’d to by Spotify one day, so she did, she fell instantly in adulation, & couldn’t work to have a dance to her favourite tune that was surely coming on soon. Overall, Biig Piig was a sophisticated ride, full of supercatchy tunes, such as the infectious Ljahr – & all wrapp’d up in opulent soundscapery.
