An Interview with Issy Sutcliffe

The tsunami that is Issy Sutcliffe & her music is mustering on the ocean horizon right now, but it will come crashing into shore before you know it – The Mumble got the inside track

Hello Issy – so first things first, where are you from & where are you living now?
I’ve lived in Manchester for 8 years but I’m from a little village called Ribchester.

When did you first realise you could sing?
When I was around the age of 5.

What were your musical influences growing up?
My dad used to have a compilation album of 70s-80s punk and I would know all the words.

If you could have three famous singers round for tea, who would they be & what would you cook them – starters, mains & dessert?
Nina Simone, Avril Lavigne, Lana del Rey – I can’t cook id just order us a Mexican! ( my favourite)

When did you start writing your own songs?
When I was around 6, I used to be very inspired by Avril Lavigne who also wrote everything herself. I only started properly performing with guitar when I was 14 though. They were all very much fast-blues rock, Johnny Cash style, songs.

What for you are the ingredients for a classic song?
A particular subject or feeling.
A good singalong chorus.
A fuzzy guitar
A single line which makes people fall over.

What does Issy Sutcliffe like to do when she’s not making bangin’ music?
I am with my rabbit!! Or watching movies – I really appreciate a good actor and storyline.

How are you finding the Manchester music scene?
I’m still very much exploring it now because I’ve only done a couple of gigs and I used to work nights. I’ll let you know in a couple of months!

You’ve got a band together, can you tell us about ‘your boys?’
Yeah, I have Boni, who plays deadly guitar. He’s an absolutely perfect addition to my band because he’s very much about being fuzzy, messy, loud with swagger and attitude. He also helps a lot, because I struggle making sure I have all the right equipment such as wires, and picks – which is amazing!
Then there’s Dom on drums. Dom is so talented, but the main thing I love about Dom is how much he has a genuine love for music, when we see other bands he’s never, say, about on his phone, he just looks like he’s having the time of his life.

How would you describe your sound?
Fuzzy
Catchy
Personality-fuelled

Can you talk us through your releases so far?
Yeah I have out…

Drugs can’t fix me

What does 2025 have in store for Issy Sutcliffe & the band?
The story of Issy Sutcliffe Volume II is gonna be very different from the first one, the quality of the songs are just so much better because I have not only improved so much just in my writing, but in my singing as well.
