Mustafa Algiyadi is a Libyan born comedian who has traversed the English channel from Berlin to entertain The Edinburgh Fringe through his struggles with cultural indifferences. During his studies in Germany, Mustafa threw himself into the murky world of stand-up comedy, and with a knack for storytelling soon became aware of his potential.

“Almost an Alien” in no way describes Mustafa, as he is a handsome, well-groomed, charismatic guy (according to himself), and appears to draw the entire middle-eastern diaspora in Edinburgh to witness his hard-hitting and courageous comedy show.

Growing up in an Arabic culture, the only gateway he had to the ideals and customs of Western and European culture was “Sex In The City”. Encouraged by his affections for this show, he embarked upon his own journey of Sofa Riding, an event I am sure could be a contender for the next Olympic Games, if the enthusiastic Mustafa was its ambassador.

“Almost An Alien” is a unique and cutting-edge, culture-splitting show that delves into those certain restricted areas surrounding religion and traditions. To be honest, its a breath of fresh air to see an Arabic Comedian tackle the stigmas surrounding what we can say, and what we can’t, within the restraints of our respective cultures.

Audience interaction was immediately grasped by Mustafa and continued throughout the hour, proving key skill which ultimately ended up in rivers of laughter. Comedy that breaks down boundaries and tosses out of our comfort zone, and done with vengeance.

Subject matter is pivotal in holding an audience’s attention. and with Public Breast Feeding, Sexual Experiences, Camels, the Personal Requirements of a Passport Holding Wife, alongside pleasurable moments with Pork and Partners, this show drops more comedy pellets than the Tories dropped seats in the last election.

Funny, direct and straight-talking. “Almost an Alien” is a fearless piece of comedy that will shock and tickle you in a way no other show will. If breaking down barriers is the way forward to a more understanding and accepting society, then Mustafa Algiyadi does it perfectly.
