Chelsea Birkby is a pure joy to watch, like, she’s just so bloomin’ happy. A wee bit crazy, a wee bit quirky, her smile is like one of those open spaceship decks on a Death Star, or summat – inviting us from the dark, empty & vacuous nothingness of our lives, to dock into the space-station of her art… full of light, oxygen, & well-crafted comedy.
Chelsea’s happy anima is totally infectious; everyone’s on her side, whatever the level of her material is gonna be. Luckily, it’s very good… intellectually heady in places, girly-silly in others, when it comes to a comedy-scape she’s a pure all-rounder. Appreciating both Kim Kardashian’s wisdom & her grandmother’s underlinings of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, she has a broad socio-anthropological range, which keeps us interested, & a tad intoxicated to tell you the truth.
“Sexual Shame is my favorite thing to do stand-up about”
She’s a proper glamball, happy to accentuate her looks with subtle touches. This is something I’d only notice subconsciously, normally, but she actually emphasises & invites us to study her kosmetika thro’ one of the main themes of the show, being her curious enjoyment of a post-viral objectification of her own body by men, & the insistence that we all enjoy being objectified – & she’s probably absolutely correct in this. For example, should marital vows be changed from “I do” to “I would”?
Her room-work is excellent – to be fair we’re all a little bit in awe of her, she’s quite a diva really, glittering & sparkling thro’ her smart & sassy set as we hang on every word. Then, come the finale, there’s genuine eye-glistening waves of emotion welling up inside her – this show means a lot to Chelsea, & it’s nice to see such a connection with a comedian & her set – this one’s from the soul!
